Those in the Sea-Navy always wore shoes dyed black. We in the Naval Air Branch also wore black shoes, but when our wearing khaki uniforms, we were the only ones to wear brown-shoes. We were sometimes called the Brown Shoe Navy. I was jealous because I couldn't get a date and he had two girls living with him and drove a Corvette. The girls helped pay for it.

Four year of college and an Officer. That must bite a bit.
Poorer times. However, the Metro was one block away. Walked down two stories in large tunnels to get there. The underground was busy as a hive.
Met a friend while in Norfolk, enlisted first class. I enjoyed his company. I was really envious of him, even if he was a black shoe.
Remember when we stayed in Virginia when visiting Washington DC with Mark. It was really hot, the motel's air conditioning was on the fritz and everyone had to leave the door open all night to survive.
Spacious house, but they sure didn't know about a king size bed.

Traveled to the western side of the State, with Mountains on either side.
Talking of songs and movies made, through Shenandoah Valley we ride.
Owned by both the South and the North we went by Civil War Forts.
Saw Blue Ridge Mountains on the west and to the East major Ports.

In the 60's while at sea I flew jets off the deck of the USS America.
On land lived in Virginia Beach, flew and worked from NAS Oceana.
A learning new Ensign joined the fleet in Malta in the Mediterranean.
Drinking too much at each port of call, learned to hate both Ouzo & Gin.

Mt. Vernon was such a wonderful place. It was funny to think that the First President of our country had fewer amenities then almost anyone now. Their kitchen was outside the house. The most striking feature was the huge front porch facing the Potomac River. Just imagine who sat on that front porch. Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Mason, Franklin and so many more, talking, laughing and sharing their visions. Remember the guide saying, "Visitors can sit on the front porch in the big old high back rockers." I remember that the libraries were not very big, compared to all the books I have read.
